Agios Kyrillos Wind Farm

The Agios Kyrillos wind farm is located on Crete, the cradle of Europe’s most ancient civilization. The island is also home to two of our other wind farms, Voskero and Kouloukonas.

Community impact

The wind farm is located in an area where there are bird crossings and for this reason, in collaboration with the Museum of Natural History and the University of Crete, these flights and the paths of the birds were studied over the years. This is how the Program of Operation and Monitoring of Feeders for Birds of Prey in the regions of Asterousia – Kofina and SE Psiloritis in Crete was created.

The Program includes the supply, operation and monitoring of existing feeding stations (“feeders”) for birds of prey, from municipal slaughterhouses, which are already installed in the areas of Asterousia – Kofina and SE Psiloritis (a total of 2 existing feeders for birds of prey) , and at the same time they are distant from the wind farms in the area.

On overcast days, the birds follow the pathway they know and head to the feeders to rest and eat, keeping them out of danger. At the same time, replenishing food resources makes up for the reduction of livestock farming in the Greek countryside in recent decades, thus significantly supporting the population of birds of prey in the region.

From the beginning of 2019 until October 2022, we have provided a total of about 12 tons of food scraps or bones for the birds of prey into the feeders.
