The Monastiri 2 wind farm in the Rhodope regional unit recently provided the setting for a dramatic Wind Turbine Generator evacuation drill at a height of 65 meters, involving members of our Operation and Maintenance team, the local police force and the Greek fire service.
The safety of the people who operate our plants every day is our top priority. For this reason, we carried out an innovative Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) evacuation drill at our Monastiri 2 wind farm. This is located in the Municipal Unit of Kechros, in the Municipality of Arriani, in the Rhodope regional unit. The drill was performed in collaboration with the 4th Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) of the Greek fire service.
The Wind Turbine Generator evacuation drill was successfully coordinated by the Commander of the 4th Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK), Michalis Altiparmakis, with the presence and participation of both the National Center for Emergency Assistance (EKAB) unit and the Arriani Police Department. The scenario of the drill included the rescue of personnel from the wind farm’s Operation and Maintenance (O&M) team, from the 65-meter-high wind turbine saddle. Members of the Response Unit rescued employees with the use of ropes and special equipment for working at an altitude while they used special stretchers for their safe transportation on the ground.
An excellent record
At the same time, the rescuers from EMAK practiced ascent and descent with double stoppers, the use of rescue equipment, belts and position stabilizers. They were also informed about the operation and accessories and equipment of wind turbines, in order to act safely and effectively in incidents in similar conditions.
The exercise was attended by, among others, the deputy mayor of Kehros, Haseki Ali, as well as local government officials. After the end of the drill, in order to provide support to the Greek Fire Service, we responded to the relevant request and donated safety equipment to the 4th Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) while thanking them for their decisive contribution to the safety and prosperity of society as a whole.
