The story of Kastanologgos on Naftemporiki TV

We spoke to Naftemporiki TV about the reforestation project we completed in Kastanologgos, giving new life to 660 acres of chestnut forest

We recently completed a five-year reforestation program in the area of Kastanologgos, in South Evia, near the Kafireas Wind Cluster. We had the opportunity to talk to Naftemporiki TV about this initiative, which will contribute decisively to the regeneration of the ancient wild chestnut forests of the area.

The ancient forest of Kastanologgos, on the slopes of Mount Ochi, was in danger of extinction, with its youngest tree being 150 years old. Identifying the immediate need for forest revitalization, we started in 2018, under the guidance of the Forestry Department and the Local Authorities, a holistic reforestation effort  of 660 acres, planting a total  of 30,000 new trees.

A visionary project

The project included several critical stages, such as the creation of forest roads and fire zones to improve accessibility and safety, as well as the installation  of 13,000 meters of fencing in order to protect the new trees from overgrazing and other exogenous factors. To ensure the survival of the new trees, we installed over 126,000 meters of water network and we have created corresponding tanks, having committed to their maintenance in the coming years.

Today, Kastanologgos is experiencing an impressive revival: for the first time in 150 years, new chestnut trees are taking root and growing in this primeval forest, having a positive effect on the environment, enhancing biodiversity and highlighting the natural wealth of the area.
