Energy storage is a catalyst for the energy transition, as it allows greater use of production from renewable sources. Investments in storage systems are the only way to reduce energy costs and ensure adequacy and stability for households and businesses.

Critical role in the electricity system

Modern storage systems make a decisive contribution to the flexibility and adequacy of the electrical system. They support the management of congestion and overproduction, while ensuring energy coverage during peak periods.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global storage market has almost doubled within a year, reaching 170 GWh in 2024 from 90 GWh in 2023 – a trend that is expected to intensify even more in the coming years.

Principia's strategy

With an eye to the future, we are investing in innovation with energy storage projects at the forefront. A primary example is our 49 MW BESS project "Themelio" in Chalkidiki, which is among the winners of the recent stand-alone storage tender.

Enhancing the penetration of renewables

Renewable energy sources are at the core of the strategy for a sustainable and independent energy future, according to the National Energy and Climate Plan. Energy storage enhances the penetration of renewables into the energy mix, harnessing production when it peaks – like photovoltaics on days of high sunshine.

During these hours, battery systems absorb and store energy that can replace or support the operation of conventional production units.

Cost reduction and price stability

Storage acts as a buffer for fluctuations in energy prices, stabilizing supply and limiting the need to resort to expensive, polluting units. This translates into lower costs and greater security for end consumers.

Optimizing electrical space

The combination of storage with the modernization and expansion of the grid is necessary to cope with restrictions and cuts in RES production. At the same time, solutions such as the repowering of existing plants or hybridization with the installation of photovoltaics in existing wind farms maximize the utilization of the available electrical space and increase the overall efficiency of the projects.

Towards a stable regulatory framework

The rapid penetration of new technologies requires a clear and stable regulatory framework. Only in this way will the necessary environment be created to attract investments, make the best use of the existing infrastructure and complete the transition to a sustainable and autonomous energy model for the country.
