Global Victory for Aiolos NTUA: NTUA innovation reaches the top of the world with the support of Principia
For the second consecutive year, Aiolos NTUA, the student team of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), claimed first place overall at the International Small Wind Turbine Contest (ISWTC), reaffirming its leadership in the design and development of small wind turbines. The team also secured first place in the Annual Energy Production category, achieving the highest energy output among all participating universities.
The international competition took place a few days ago in the Netherlands, bringing together leading universities from around the world. The final testing phase was hosted at Delft University of Technology, where each team assembled its wind turbine and underwent a series of demanding performance tests in the university's state-of-the-art wind tunnel facilities.
Innovation through the "Alcyone" wind turbine
For this year's competition, Aiolos NTUA developed the "Alcyone" project, introducing an active blade pitch control system. This innovative technology improves the turbine's performance in low wind conditions while ensuring more stable operation at higher wind speeds, ultimately increasing its overall energy production.
This latest achievement builds on the team's success in last year's competition, demonstrating that its excellence is driven by continuous research, interdisciplinary collaboration and constant innovation. Aiolos NTUA brings together students from NTUA's Schools of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, united by a shared vision of developing innovative solutions for the wind energy sector.
